Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit celebrates 25 years

by Dave Rigotti on January 6, 2009

Today, in the flurry of Mac rumors, confirmations, hacks, and the keynote at Macworld, Microsoft have announced that the Macintosh Business Unit is celebrating 25 years of “25 Years of Connecting Mac Users to Microsoft Productivity”.

I have a Mac. However, it’s more for the hardware than software. Do you know of a PC laptop with an aluminum case? Update: I found some metal-cased PCs, which I didn’t know to exist. I run OSX and Windows, but spend most of my time on OSX and wouldn’t be able to: be an effective student, run my business, or manage my web sites without Microsoft Office.

Update: TechFlash is now reporting that about 77 percent of Mac users in the U.S. are running Microsoft’s Office for Mac. Wow!

Great software is an investment

I’ll be honest: I used to run OpenOffice… and for a few years. In my ignorance, I felt like I was fighting the man (Microsoft) and saving myself money. However, now I realize that great software is an investment, not a cost. Having the real Word means that my documents appear the same to all; it was incredibly embarrassing for me to give a client or a Professor document, only to have them email me saying it couldn’t be viewed.

The Mac Business Unit team

While I worked at Microsoft, I had friends on the MBU team and met some of the senior members at product fairs. They were incredibly nice,… especially for being amid Apple’s largest competitor. They took the time to respond to criticism and were very open to product recommendations. My ideas, however, have yet to be implemented ;-) .

In closing, hats off to the MBU… you guys rock and have helped me so much.
