I'm going to vote a thumbs down on TweetGetter. To me, it defeats the whole purpose of social media which is the relationship/trust building. I think that is why some people fail in the MLM business - because it's all about building your downline and not about building your relationship with people in your business.

Plus, with an inflated follower count - how can you keep track of anything? The "value" you offer would be literally buried amongst the people who may not offer any. And is having huge numbers really the goal or that important? Obviously, having "celebrity" status would be great for the ego, but I think the larger an entity gets, the harder it gets to make a personal touch and establish the trust that results in making your network valuable.

I also mentioned this on my blog a bit ago about <a href="http://janeile.com/2009/01/22/the-trust-factor-with-linkedins-lions/" title="The Trust Factor of LinkedIn's LIONs" rel="nofollow">LinkedIn's LIONs</a>.

Allen,
Hopefully, I can make it to the next Tweetup. Glad to hear you had an enjoyable time.

My reaction to TweeterGetter is mixed. I find multi-level marketing very interesting, however it hardly ever works out as planned (remember "agloco"?). However, I as a social media consultant, I find it embarrassing that some people are more concerned with increasing their reach, than building lost-lasting, meaningful relationships.

I agree with Scott in that the mechanics of how you're found doesn't matter, to a point. However, it seems unlikely that people using TweetGetter would even receive your message, as many are following many others in an effort to increase their reach (because many people auto-follow, which I disagree with, but that's another discussion).

Anyways, it's a tricky topic, and one that's not completely fleshed out yet.

Thanks for the comment!

Hi Dave,

Sorry you couldn't make the first Toledo area tweetup last night. It was fun.

I had an interesting exchange the other day with Scott Allen, of "The Virtual Handshake", about Tweeter Getter. I saw he was involved and quizzed him about it. He said his feeling was that it didn't so much matter how someone found him and that if he provided value they would stay and if he didn't they would leave. The mechanics of finding him were/are less important. He also said that since he was a social media consultant he thought it important to experiment w/ as long as it wasn't blatantly unethical.

Something to ponder. My initial reaction to Tweeter Getter was negative but after this exchange I wonder if Scott doesn't have a point. What do you think?

Warmly,

Allen

Well Dave,

I found that establishing relationships with my followers work best. It seems that people want to have relationships with people and not businesses. It's so impersonal. So I would say that your time will be better spent creating and maintaining meaningful relationships.
